Learn to Swim: Open Water Edition

Learning to swim in a swimming pool (with 4 walls and a floor no matter the depth) is easy. There are certain risk/factors that are eliminated. There’s no need to worry about waves, high tide, rocks, marine life and and ‘under  tow’(current) that can sweep/pull the swimmer from the surface. Being prepared for open water cannot be overemphasized.
Learning the freestyle/front crawl technique, breaststroke technique and treading water efficiently must be learnt properly. There are variations to all three above mentioned techniques. Being able to swim with the head above the water in the freestyle and breaststroke is key! Why? The swimmer must be able to make references to features in the open water so as not to swim out too far to sea. Other things to look out for are buoys, boats, fishing nets/meshes and other swimmers.
The swimmer must pass an aptitude test. The swimmer must be able to tread comfortably for 2 mins and then swim 100m; 50m continuously of breaststroke and 50m continuously of freestyle. The swimmer will be introduced to head up breaststroke and freestyle techniques and comfortability with both established.
At the end of the end of the 60 mins session the candidate must be able to tread for 3 mins, swim head up freestyle for 10 strokes and breaststroke for 10 pulls comfortably. This must be done to transition to the open water phase. Contact the instructor to be apart of the open water process experience.

How many classes will I need to learn how to swim?

There is no set amount of time that can be placed on learning to swim. There are several factors to consider when learning to swim. These are water comfortability, how quickly the student assimilates the information, persistency of the individual and consistency of swimming.
However each student’s session, though a group session if the public is being used, is ‘tailor-made’ to suit the individual. At the first class an assessment is done, after which a more accurate feedback can be given in regards to time.
